Avid’s flagship editing product, Media Composer, has been on the scene for a little over twenty years and has looked and worked roughly the same way for that whole time.
Today saw the announcement of the first major overhaul since Media Composer’s numbering was restarted with the release of Adrenaline in 2003… And it’s a big overhaul – not only has it been rewritten entirely as a 64-bit application but it also looks different with a redesigned UI. ( Read More)

In the past few years, a barrage of new video acquisition formats and recording methodologies have sprouted like mushrooms after the rain. The major shift has come in the form of tapeless, file-based acquisition that uses equipment that has its roots in the information technology industry. As video post-production has scrambled to keep up, editors have been left with little choice than to become ersatz compression specialists and computer technologists. We all wear a few extra hats these days (Read More)

During the past few weeks, I have been testing out and “kicking the tires”, on Grass Valley’s Edius 6. Edius was originally created by Canopus, and was bought out by Grass Valley. They have continued to improve upon its structure providing a large selection of codec support. Before I dive into my review, I would like to thank Grass Valley for graciously providing me with this copy of Edius 6. ( Read More)

Well we are now in to 2011 so it’s time to look back at 2010 and some of the products that became available. Last year my award went to the excellent Convergent Designs NanoFlash. As with last year there is no real meaning to the award, it’s just an excuse for me to highlight my favourite product from 2010. ( Read More)

As your editing workflow slow because you are shooting with DSLR or AVCHD cameras? Do you ever feel like your NLE is fighting you instead of working with you? I have heard complaints about instability, crashes, unresponsiveness, rendering, and transcoding, and the list goes on and on. I have been editing on a computer for 11 years, and I have experienced very few of those complaints. In 1999, I was editing with Rex Edit by Canopus. Fast-forward 11 years; I am now editing on EDIUS 5.5 by Grass Va ( Read More)

Edius is not among the most well known Windows based nonlinear editing applications, but this is not for lack of features, functionality, format support, or affordability. For several years now, Edius has been part of the Grass Valley/Thomson stable of products, acquired from original developer Canopus. It's often offered as a bundle with I/O hardware, such as HDStorm, HDSpark, or HDThunder. In this review, we are just considering the Edius 5.1 application and multifunctional software bundle. Based upon the high quality of images it records, its versatility and its portability, I can offer my highest recommendation for the Convergent Design nanoFlash for anyone who needs footage whose bit rate, color depth and resolution must achieve the most rigid of broadcast standards. And it comes with the assurance of a company who stands behind the product and who seeks every opportunity to add functionality to the product through frequent free firmware updates. ( Read More)
