f you’re an editor working with Apple’s Final Cut Pro, you’re probably well aware of the controversy and debate surrounding its latest release, which the company has dubbed Final Cut Pro X. If you haven’t heard about all the drama, pull up a chair and, in this temporary departure from the normal Tech Tips format, I’ll fill you in on how Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his minions in Cupertino seemingly tried to pull a fast one on an entire industry in an effort to make the craft of editing easier and ( Read More)

At the urging of a friend, Walter got back to work on these Transitioning videos as he is now jumping into the Adobe Premiere Pro application.
As Walter noted in his blogs, for the Final Cut Pro editor migrating over to Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5, the transition really could not be much easier. I often refer to PPro as “Final Cut Pro 8? because it feels like the natural progression from FCP 7.
But there are a few quirks within the application that will drive you absolutely bonkers. So befor ( Read More)

"When talking about FCPX, the greater topics of philosophy, ethics, religion, personal well-being, the time space continuum, the consequence of true and real change, the past, the present, the future and, of course, our collective video careers, are often touched upon." Jeremy Garchow invites you to read the FCPX forums here at the COW to gain a greater sense of how people might feel about it if you have not frequented them lately. Yes, there is a lot of work to be done, and there are many holes ( Read More)

Remember all the brouhaha that erupted just a week or so before the NAB 2011 FCPUG SuperMeet when Apple took over the event to preview Final Cut Pro X, thereby kicking out all the other presenters who had planned their own demos and paid for sponsorships? Here we are six months later and it’s time for another SuperMeet, this time scheduled for September 11 at the The Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky in Amsterdam during IBC.

A few weeks ago I wrote about the backlash against Apple's release of Final Cut Pro X, asking you for your thoughts about the new software and how you're making the decision to upgrade (or disregard). ( Read More)

Apple’s Final Cut X: Right Idea, Appalling Execution

As we have mentioned on many an occasion, we am an unremorseful Apple fanboi. we am moreover enterprisey in my leanings. On occasion, we like myself as the second forthcoming of Steven Spielberg even though in fact that would most appropriate be regarded as demented and sad thinking. So when Apple expelled Final Cut Pro X we was more than excited to see what could be completed to upgrade a g ( Read More)

Shortly after I first arrived in the USA, I was teaching some Final Cut Pro classes for Intelligent Media. It was just before Final Cut Pro 2 was released, which I had been beta testing for some months, but 1.2.5 was the release version we were teaching. At that time it was challenging for new users to get settings right, particularly getting a good match between Capture and Sequence settings, so the first half day was dedicated to teaching settings and making sure they were right. It was person ( Read More)

Final Cut Pro X has been controversial because it greatly alters the traditional workflow and eliminates features many editors find essential.
Some of those missing pieces — like multi-cam editing — are apparently coming soon. But most of the big changes are simply The Way Things Are Done Now. They go beyond keyboard shortcuts and helper apps to fundamentally different ways of working. ( Read More)

Alan asks: I’ve learned to use and love FCP7 and thinking of upgrading over to FCPX… or is it an upgrade? Does it have all of the same features? is it faster? effects are all there? I would like to see a side by side comparison. Thanks!
Answer: Two guys from Clearhead Media took the time to do a non-scientific comparison of the two and came up with some very interesting results: (Read More)

Has anybody said to you "Is FCPX different from FCP7" and you've had to try to describe the vast changes in the new version? This video might help.
We like quick demos or tutorials and trust us we have watched an awful lot this year. There seems to be a new style of video that just rattles through features or how-tos, a good example is the much respected FCPX demo by Evan Schectmann. ( Read More)

We asked Adobe’s Al Mooney, product manager for Premiere Pro to answer some uncomfortable questions about Apple’s moves.
About a month ago, the professional digital video editing world was shocked, when it became apparent that Apple had decided to abandon its venerable Final Cut Pro file format and, although there was a new Final Cut Pro X product, there’d be no upgrade path between the two products. (Read More)

We’ve all been following the Final Cut Pro X saga since its release back in June. And we’ve all read about those many big things that FCPX seems to be missing … like XML in and out, third-party hardware support and the inability to import old FCP7 projects. But one thing that I’ve found after using FCPX for around two months now is there are a lot of little things that I’ve come to enjoy as an FCP7 user that didn’t make their way into FCPX. ( Read More)

I began editing professionally in 1997. It started with a Sony BVE-9100 linear system, hen migrated into the world of NLE systems beginning with D-Vision, which became the Discreet Edit. Moved on to Avid Media Composer in 1999 and also (somewhere in the 2000-2002 range) I had a brief stint with DPS Velocity. However, the Avid Media Composer system and I were pretty much tied at the hip from 1999 until 2007. Then Final Cut Pro came along. It was cheaper. I needed a full HD system. The deal was d ( Read More)

Final Cut editors have lamented big time about the missing features in Final Cut Pro X. For instance – no VTR i/o except over FireWire – and no broadcast video monitoring output. I agree that those are important issues, but they don’t necessarily hold me back from using the application. It’s the less obvious things that are related to the inherent design, which I find hard to accept. There are thousands of little things I do in every session that are not in FCP X or simply require additional ste ( Read More)

Final Cut has jumped a couple of versions – it’s now called Final Cut Pro X, and this (apart from a likeness to ‘OS X’) is probably because the version is 10, whereas my previous up-to-date Final Cut was 7.0.3.
This X version has been incredibly contentious, with some Final Cut professionals panning the software and even demanding (and sometimes even getting) their money back. The main causes for concern seem to be FCPX not being able to open legacy projects – which I concur is a pretty incredi ( Read More)
