With last year's introduction of the Thunderbolt interface, the mobile editing workstation really came into its own. Some observers speculated that the super-high-speed jack, which makes incredibly powerful peripherals truly portable, was a signal of the impending demise of the decidedly non-portable Mac Pro tower.

With its release, Final Cut Pro X was widely panned by the professional editing community, who have been leaving their beloved editing system in droves. From the looks of Twitter last night there were a couple of surprises at the Friday evening’s San Francisco Supermeet. First bit of news I saw was that Final Cut Pro User Group (FCPUG) has decided to drop the Final Cut Pro designation from their name to become the Creative Pro User Group. XML (eXtensible Markup Language) has become a common method of data interchange between postproduction applications. I’ll admit it – I’m a Mac Guy. And for those that regularly read my blog posts, newsletter articles or have checked out some of my workflow hacks this is isn’t news.
Lately though, I’ve become a lot more open minded.
Like many of my peers, I’m still a little intimidated by FCP X. But I am still planing on becoming proficient with the app because of the novel ways it improved FCP 7. I also think FCP will eventually re-gain some of it’s mindshare so I want to be able to talk knowledgeably ab ( Read More)

Recently, there was a lot of online static about Adobe changing its upgrade pricing. There were some conversations, overheard statements, and misinterpretations on what they were going to do. Many thought the only option to upgrade for CS6 was going to be a CS5 customer. I started digging into this a while back and have had a few conversations with folks to get clarification. ( Read More)

As a followup to my previous post, I received this question (or something like it) in a few emails: “do you think this same trend will hit the non-broadcast arena?”
The answer is, it depends.
It depends on what kind of work you are doing. Final Cut Pro X is not an unusable editor for many folks. Undesirable for some, but it is capable of editing programs together.
