With Apple almost throwing the baby out with the bathwater in Final Cut Pro X, it’s down to Avid to steady the video-editing ship with a solid update to its venerable Media Composer.
The first big change is that Avid has gone down the 64-bit route and for Mac users it means that Lion is a requirement. The advantage of 64-bit, besides the processing boost, is the ability to access much more memory, which is vital for complex sequences that use a lot of effects. (Read More)

Like most Avid, editors I was waiting impatiently for the 6.0 release. Dreams of 64-bit architecture were spinning in my head: background rendering, super fast transcoding, more AMA features and a new title tool were my constant smile-inducing dreams. Back in January news broke that reality television producers Bunim/Murray were switching their post-production facilities from Final Cut Pro to Avid Media Composer. This probably didn’t come as a great shock to anyone who follows post-production as the release of Final Cut Pro X had left many people (especially those in the broadcast world) a bit stunned at its lack of broadcast features. Avid has a long history of being a professional editing tool. They have long been the industry standard, however that all changed when Apple released Final Cut Pro. Apple was able to take 50-60% of Avid’s market. Today’s Market players are still Apple, Adobe and Avid. Adobe has gobbled up much of App le’s market with their aggressive marketing, and Avid with their cross-grade promotion is cutting into Apple ‘s share of the post-production market, but does Avid have what it takes to make not only ( Read More)

Avid made the jump to 64-bit in November with its mainstream Media Composer 6, Symphony 6 and NewsCutter 10 software. Though This 64-bit Version Moves Faster and Looks Different, the Overall Workflow Remains, Comfortably, the Same
The biggest news for editors when Avid began shipping Media Composer 6 last November was the NLE's transformation into a very modern, 64-bit application. Along with that came other great updates, including the support of third-party hardware options (several of which I tested with this review).

Avid Media Composer 6 began shipping last week after being announced just under a month ago. The release has seen quite a bit of press as it was teased back in the summer and a large part of that tease was letting users know what they could expect when this version came along. I haven’t had a chance to really pound MC6 as of yet since it just shipped but I have been kicking the tires on it for the last few days. Avid began distributing Media Composer 6 today. The new version has been upgraded to offer 64-bit support, and includes many new features, including a complete reinvention of the application’s approach to 3D-Stereo editing, the ability to mix in 5.1 and 7.1, “Open I/O” which allows you to use a variety of third party hardware options, tabbed bins, and a “reskinning” of the user interface. OK, here’s a little follow up to my Media Composer 6 review. In that review I mentioned that you could label your clips via a small palette of colors. Well, there is actually a way to open up that choice of colors…to get to the full color palette including the Color Wheel and Crayon options. All you need to do is Option+Command+click (or Opt+Cmd+CNTRL click if you use a trackpad) to have access to the full color options: ( Read More)

Hell froze over with Avid’s launch of Symphony 6, Media Composer 6 and NewsCutter 10. Not only are these the long-awaited 64-bit versions, but one huge feature is Avid’s new open I/O architecture, which permits full implementation of third party hardware. Well I’ve been deliberating, experimenting and talking to other editors over which NLE to adopt following the launch of FCP-X. I’ve played with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 which is really easy to transition to from FCP as it has a similar interface and editing style. I’ve experimented with FCP-X, which is very fast but has so many missing features and forces you to work in ways I don’t always like ( Read More)
