The Sonnet Technologies Qio answers one of the most significant questions posed by editors dealing with solid-state media: how do I copy the contents of the cards to my computer? And the Qio answers the question without any uncertainty.

Solid-state removable media primarily includes SxS, P2, CF and SDHC cards. Panasonic offers P2 solutions from a USB single-card reader to more sophisticated P2 editing gear. Sony markets a USB SxS reader and SxS cards can be read by the Express34 slot of Read More

Media Composer 5 will be released a week from tomorrow, and without question, it represents the biggest upgrade Avid has offered in years — since the last version 5, to be exact, way back in 1994, when the modern Media Composer was born. The symmetry is the result of Avid resetting its numbering scheme in 2003. So here we are at version 5 again. Five was — and is — a very good number for Avid. I can still remember the cheering at the user group meetings. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see that sa Read More

CS5 is among Adobe's most significant upgrades to the Production Premium bundle ever.

As video editors, we have patiently waited (and waited and waited) for tools that are as quick as our clicks and keystrokes. But performance gains in past versions of Adobe's Creative Suite have been mostly incremental. After testing one of the very latest pre-release versions, we can say that CS5 is nothing less than revolutionary. Our wait is over. Read More

There are some great discussions going on at the Avid User Community Forums about the MXO2 Mini and the what if anyhting the MAX technology can do for Avid editors. I'm going to share some of that here with you.

Just to clarify: the max would work fine with MC5, just without H.264 acceleration?

Correct. If you purchase the Mini with Max, it will function exactly like a standard mini with MC5. The MAX technology just gets ignored Read More

Music-Video Vet Don Wilson Managed a Stereo Workflow for Final Cut Pro

When Action 3D Productions hired an editor to cut the concert film Phish 3D, it made sense that they’d go to Don Wilson's Americana Media. Wilson is an Emmy-winning producer-director-editor whose experience in the industry stretches back to the early days of MTV, when he was cutting promo clips for any number of top-tier acts. The post-production Internet has been all a-Twitter for the last 24 hours after Apple Insider posted some nutty story about Apple scaling Final Cut Pro to fit more of a consumer market. After the FCP fanboys went ballistic the great, silent behemoth that is Apple actually spoke today about this very topic, telling CNET that “Final Cut Pro is the first choice for professional video editors, and we’ve never been more excited about its future,” Apple spokesman Bill Evans told CNET. “The next versio Read More

So while Adobe and Apple are having their little spat over Flash - Google swoops in with a new open source, royalty-free video format called WebM. This could be HUGE! Google has already announced that they will be converting 720p and higher res YouTube videos into WebM. WebM supports HTML5 and Flash, and hopefully will work great on my iPad. Sorenson and Telestream have already announced WebM support.

Introducing WebM, an open web media project Read More

I never thought I would say this but i am learning how to cut in Premiere. I aways dismissed it as an amateur tool. Much preferring my Final Cut Pro. All because this CS5 is damn amazing. You do need a powerful MAC with the right graphics cards. My new i7 17?MBP works great with it.

I learnt to cut tape to tape, then basic FCP, then AVID, then properly FCP and never look back. I adore FCP and use it almost every day but I was offered the chance to try out CS5 by Adobe with no strings attache Read More
