The newest iteration of the 64-bit FCP X was made available Tuesday as a free and full 30-day trial version featuring a number of, well let’s call them “requests,” from the professional community. Some of those included XML support, XSAN support, and something new called Roles. Another big “request” was multicam editing, and that is coming in early 2012, along with broadcast video monitoring. These are heady days for high-end nonlinear editing system providers. But, we may have recently lost one of the biggest players in the game. Despite the fact that Apple's Final Cut Pro 7 software is being used by 54.6 percent of the professional editing community, according to a report by market research firm SCRI International, in June Apple released a completely rewritten version called Final Cut Pro X. Much to the surprise of many, despite that this new incarnation is completely 64-bit, so Read More

It's always interesting to get hands-on time with unreleased hardware. We were recently able to benchmark Intel's upcoming Core i7-3960X CPU, comparing it to Core i7-990X, Core i7-2600K, and AMD's Phenom II X6. Will you be in line for Sandy Bridge-E? Read More

Red Giant has always embraced the little guy, a.k.a., the indie filmmaker. When they first introduced Magic Bullet years ago, I used it on my very first indie film. It made the distributors sit up and take notice: “This looks like film,” they said. Read More

Matrox have taken a different approach to Thunderbolt connectivity with their I/O products compared to other manufacturers. Instead of building new models with Thunderbolt connectors, the adaptor allows new and existing products to use the superfast technology. At IBC 2011, Matrox Electronic Systems Ltd announced their solution to bring their products up to date with Thunderbolt connectivity. The Thunderbolt adapter is available for $199 for customers who have an MXO product already. So the p Read More

I can't remember the last time I turned on my Avid Media Composer (and I have two of them BTW). I really can't. What I do remember is exporting video to use with Adobe Production Premium CS5.5. I've even rebuilt projects (at no cost to my customers) just because I could now use them to greater efficiency within the CS5 Production Premium suite. So I am interested to see how Avid can re-earn my business. A few weeks ago Avid unveiled their latest version: Media Composer 6. And it's purported Read More

When Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5 was launched more than two years ago, the message was clear that Adobe was taking Premiere Pro into the professional market segment. This is not your father's Adobe Premiere, it is a powerful NLE designed to handle the most challenging professional projects. They were the first NLE developer to commit to an all new 64-bit architecture and native HD format support. Adobe harnessed all of the power in your computer, multiple CPU cores, huge amounts of RAM and even you Read More

It’s been several weeks now since Apple released their new version of Final Cut for the masses. Having seen a demonstration of Premiere Pro CS5.5 in use at a recent video production conference, I was fairly impressed at what I saw. But as we know from even Apple’s NAB demo of Final Cut Pro X, demonstrations are not the real thing. However, seeing Apple’s demo of FCPX made me realize I didn’t want to go down the path of the iMovie-style interface, so even before Apple’s release of FCPX I was kee Read More

Q: What are the latest trends you're seeing in production and post production?
A: The biggest trend in Post Production is the decision that many Apple Final Cut Pro editors are faced with, now that FCPX is available. We are spending a lot of time talking to our customers about the many options available to them. Adobe and Avid are both offering special "switcher" or "crossgrade" promotions with discounts at 50% or more. We've seen great interest from all levels of customer’s especially po Read More
