For budget friendly, uber audio, check out the Zoom H2n Audio Recorder. We're all familiar with the truism that poor video may be forgiven as long as the audio is great, while the best video will suffer if the audio is lousy. Whether short film or feature, Hollywood blockbuster or local independent, the quality of your audio will make or break your production faster than any other single component. Read More

It would be redundant of me to, once again, emphasize just how important the quality of the audio is both when planning preproduction, when shooting, and in post production.

For those many who have begun much of their filming using the DSLR's which, aside from being great for the photo enthusiast, can produce some beautiful video footage, but to the user's dismay, the audio quality for any of the DSLRs that I have heard is quite dreadful. Fortunately there is software that can, with little Read More

The H4 remains one of the most flexible of the current crop of portable 24-bit recorders, but Zoom have found plenty of room for improvement — and, more importantly, they’ve used it.

Zoom’s H4 digital stereo recorder remains hugely popular and, despite a few reservations, is one of my favourites. With ‘combi’ jack/XLR inputs, 48V phantom power, a coincident stereo pair of mics onboard, and masses of extra functionality (from four-track mixing to guitar effects and a USB audio interface) it Read More

Recently Singular Software released DualEyes, which is a stand alone application that offers the same advanced automatic synchronization technology as PluralEyes but in my opinion, it simplifies the process even further. For my tests, I used a Canon 7D, recorded sound from a Samson Zoom H4N and imported my finished files into Adobe Premiere Pro. In terms of writing a “how-to” or creating illustrations on how to use DualEyes, it’s really not necessary. Read More

Quality audio is one part of the editing equation that no one should forget. And yet, too many do just that and put aside audio concerns until it is too late. For those filming with the newer DSLRs on the market that provide high quality HD video on top of their photo capabilities, the need for a good microphone or recording device like the Zoom H1 is mandatory.
