Media Composer is Avid’s Non-Linear Editing (NLE) suite for video and film post-production. It’s one of the four heavy weights next to Final Cut Pro, Lightworks, and to a lesser degree Adobe Premiere. Media Composer is a total solution for editors: it has powerful video editing capabilities, but also powerful integrated audio tools, and even special effect capabilities. Read More

The day has finally come where someone like me — who is always trying to expand his editing skills — no longer has to purchase a used Avid Adrenaline and an old version of Media Composer to really learn the Avid Media Composer suite.

Avid, AJA and Matrox have come together to embrace Media Composer’s newly developed third-party hardware support. AJA’s involvement, announced at NAB, is the IO Express — a powerful input, output and monitoring solution. Read More

I thought it appropriate to combine both products in one review as both are based on the powerful Nexidia phonetic search engine and are tools that will essentially change the way we edit. Nexidia, by the way, is well-known in the IT industry for its work in developing phonetic search technologies.

Being on two different editing platforms, the software offerings are not exactly competitors as much as siblings... in rivalry. Read More

Avid was first out of the gate in the run-up to NAB with its release of the Media Composer 5.5 update for this flagship NLE product line. Avid Media Composer 5.5 (and the associated Symphony and NewsCutter versions) marks a continued openness starting with the release of Media Composer 5.0 last year. That release demonstrated a major retooling, which drew mixed reviews from veteran Avid editors. The most recent version, 5.0.3.8, is very stable and has been tweaked to adjust the behavior of some Read More

It was a few weeks ago that Avid shipped another update to Media Composer, this time moving 5.0 to 5.5. It wasn’t the huge update that we saw in 5.0 but it continues to add features and bug fixes across the application. I’m guessing that since this was a smaller release Avid chose not to use NAB as the announcement/release for the upgrade (NAB is next week!) rather they’ll be showcasing it through out their booth. I was able to preview the upgrade before the official release and it felt quite st Read More

Last week Avid announced that they would be releasing and shipping the newest version of Media Composer on March 8th - a full month before NAB! This is very exciting news and it created a flury of tweets, blog posts and discussions in user groups and forums. At last years NAB, Avid announced Media Composer 5, and it was he hit of the show. It won numerous honors throughout the industry at NAB and throughout the year and was even named the Videoguys Top Product of 2010. It looks like the new vers Read More

When talking software I think of new versions in two ways: updates and upgrades. Updates are more like the smaller “dot” releases that take a piece of software from version 2.0 to 2.0.1 or 2.1. Then there’s upgrades that move a full version from 2.0 to 3.0. Somewhere in between there’s upgradey-updates that move from, say, 5.0 to 5.5. Read More

Kool-Aid! Get your Kool-Aid here!

Avid has unveiled the latest update to their editing suite family: Media Composer & Symphony 5.5, as well as DS 5.5. Below are some of the biggest features to the Media Composer and Symphony 5.5 releases.

1. Video I/O: AJA I/O Express. Easily the biggest announcement. Avid has traditionally restricted baseband video input and output to Avid built hardware. We saw a glimpse last year of the move off this paradigm with the adoption of the Read More

Today Avid Technology issued a press release outlining the changes and new features in their latest version of the Media Composer software, Avid Media Composer 5.5. Among the new features is one that particularly excites me…and it has been very difficult to keep quiet about this (I’m on the Avid Beta, so I’ve been playing with this for a while). Media Composer 5.5 now works with AJA hardware, specifically, the AJA IO Express. What is major about this announcement, other than adding another th Read More
