They say don’t knock it before you try it. And sure enough, until recently, I have been fairly open to the idea of adopting Final Cut Pro X as my NLE of choice. But I have just delivered my first project cut exclusively on FCP X and must say it was a completely unpleasant experience. "Everything just changed in post", is the tagline for FCP X on Apple's website. It sure did: for the first time in 9 years as a professional editor I actually didn’t enjoy editing. Read More

The new (or renewed) interest in Avid Media Composer is being fueled by Apple’s launch of Final Cut Pro X last year and aided by Avid’s discounted cross-grade price. Many experienced FCP editors are now investigating the nuances of what seems like a completely foreign interface to some. Tutorial DVDs like Steve Hullfish’s Avid Media Composer for Final Cut Pro Users from Class on Demand is a great start. Read More

With Apple almost throwing the baby out with the bathwater in Final Cut Pro X, it’s down to Avid to steady the video-editing ship with a solid update to its venerable Media Composer.

The first big change is that Avid has gone down the 64-bit route and for Mac users it means that Lion is a requirement. The advantage of 64-bit, besides the processing boost, is the ability to access much more memory, which is vital for complex sequences that use a lot of effects. Read More

For a limited time only, Avid Media Composer & Apple Final Cut Pro Owners can step-up to Avid's professional editing & finishing software at the lowest price ever! At last year's NAB show Avid launched a special Media Composer Crossgrade program for Final Cut Pro editors to come back to Avid for just $995. That program was a huge success! Now Avid is upping the ante and going all in by making the same offer to Avid Symphony 6! Yes, that's right, FCP editors may now crossgrade to Avid Symphony Read More

Shane started his blog in 2005, when he made my leap from editing on an Avid in standard definition…to editing with FCP in high definition…thus the name Little Frog in High Def (Little Frog being his Indian name from my youth). This blog was him talking about his foray into the world of HD specifically using Final Cut Pro…for broadcast TV shows. A diary of my successes and his failures…lessons he wanted to share so that people could learn from my…well, successes and failures. Read More

Our short and sweet blog post yesterday about switching to Avid MC6 for our broadcast work touched off a flurry of requests for yet more information on our decision. Folks want to know “what specific features did it have that the others didn’t.” “Can you break it down feature by feature, why you made the switch?” ”You seemed so gung-ho about Adobe early on in your switch.” Read More

Back in January news broke that reality television producers Bunim/Murray were switching their post-production facilities from Final Cut Pro to Avid Media Composer. This probably didn’t come as a great shock to anyone who follows post-production as the release of Final Cut Pro X had left many people (especially those in the broadcast world) a bit stunned at its lack of broadcast features. There was a lot written about this subject but I had a few more questions so I spoke with Bunim/Murray’s sen Read More

A slightly different MacBreak Studio Live this month. This time Steve Kantor joins the regulars where they take a look at Avid's Media Composer 6 and how it compares and differs from Final Cut Pro X. It's a good battle! In the blue corner we have Steve Kantor who is demoing Avid, in the Red corner we have Steve Martin who puts up a good fight for FCPX. Last Friday I came across this bit of news:

Many of us have been editing with FCP for a few years now and were exited when Apple finally decided to re-write FCP from the ground up finally giving us a 64bit architecture, FCP only works on the Apple Mac so if you are intrenched as most of us are in the Mac platform the alternatives are AVID and Adobe’s Premiere Pro. Sadly, Final Cut Pro has been haemorrhaging professional customers to AVID and Adobe since the introduction of FCP-10. Walter Murch reckons he has finally reached the end of Read More

Yes it’s true. Josiah has finally converted from a Premiere and FCP fan to an Avid maniac. Josiah loves this NLE.

Premiere and FCP pale in comparison to the speed, ease of use, intelligence, and incredible support that Avid. On top of all that About 90% of all of your favorite feature films and prime time television programs are all cut on an Avid system. Read More
