Over the past year Canon has produced and shipped tens of thousands of DSLR camcorders worldwide. With so many of these getting into the hands of such a wide range of videographers, from home users, to event videographers, independent filmmakers and now even Network TV shows and Hollywood movies, the impact has been dramatic. At Videoguys.com, we are getting calls and emails and reading new forum threads each day asking us what is the best way to edit and work with the footage created from these Read More

After Canon PR jumped the gun a bit on the release of the EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro, they have finally released the tool here in the back half of March. If you haven’t heard about the EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro it’s adds an option to the FCP Log and Transfer tool to import Canon 1D, 5D Mark II and 7D H.264 Quicktime files and transcode to any of the ProRes flavors (or Apple Intermediate Codec) in the process. We all know this fact: The Canon DSLRs (5D, 7D, 1D) use the H.264 codec for the video they shoot and wrap that into a .mov QuickTime. While Final Cut Pro does work with .movs, these H.264 versions are clunky to edit requiring much rendering when in a FCP timeline. H.264 wasn’t designed to be a robust edit format anyway so the files need to be transcoded into something more edit friendly. Read More

Technology is converging - consumer digital cameras now shoot HD video and video camcorders shoot multi-megapixel photos. And the trend has continued into professional digital SLR cameras, which have evolved to add the ability to shoot HD video. Read More

There has been an amazing amount of chatter around the HD video capabilities of recent still cameras - if they can still be called that! Rather than play into the hupe of what MIGHT be possible with these cameras, Creative Cow Magazine Contributing Editor Marco Solorio takes you inside the real world of production with paying clients using these cameras, including workarounds for their current limitations, and some of the things that video shooters will need to know as they get started using the Read More

It took a lot of commenting and complaining from the many folks who bought a Canon 5D Mark II but unless you live under a rock (or just don’t really care) then you’ve heard that Canon is releasing an updated firmware for the 5D Mark II that will allow for 24p recording Read More

If Gebbs Wedding Films' Michael Gebben didn't have a strict personal policy against selling clients on technology, you can bet he'd be bragging about the two most significant additions to his arsenal he's made recently: Canon's 5D Mark II and EOS 7D DSLRs. For Gebben, a rising industry star whose demo was recently selected for use in the nationally syndicated TV show Wedlock or Deadlock, these so-called fusion cameras have made his already great-looking same day edits (SDEs)-his studio's special Read More

If you are familiar with the more expensive Canon EOS 7D, you'll notice that quite a few of the features listed above were handed down from this camera. There is a lot of chatter online about the viability of the EOS 7D now that the Rebel T2i offers many of its features but with a price savings of $900 (based on street pricing). The thinking is that maybe they should get the Rebel T2i instead and put the extra $$$ toward better & faster lenses. Since this overview was written with the idea of he Read More

RED’s Scarlet appears to be just around the corner and both Sony and Panasonic seem to be responding to the challenge of the upstart photo manufacturers. No matter what acronym you use – DSMC, HD-DSLR, HDSLR – these hybrid HD video / still photo cameras have grabbed everyone’s attention. 2010 may indeed be the year that hybrid digital SLR cameras hit their stride. No, this isn’t the 5D workflow article that you’ve been waiting for. That’s still coming in another couple of weeks. In the meantime, I’ve started on another Canon 5D commercial. This time I’m cutting the project in Avid Media Composer instead of Final Cut Pro. There are a number of reasons, including some recent stability issues I’ve had with FCP. In addition, the creative treatment calls for some nice speed ramp effects. Avid’s FluidMotion is simply a much better slomo technology than anything Read More

People have been talking about the amazing video footage coming from new DSLR cameras, at resolutions that can easily exceed 4K digital cinema files, for a couple of years now, in all kinds of forums, including Cinematography, After Effects, and many NLE forums. In the past year, that traffic has continued to accelerate, and so we invite you to join us in a newly-created forum to concentrate all of that energy in one place: Creative Cow's new "DSLR Video" forum. The 7D has manual control, great function control, and can work with a variety of traditional lenses and accessories.

Canon is stepping up its prosumer DSLR game with an all-new camera line, and it all starts with the 7D. Sporting HD video in 1080/24p, 720/60p, and the 18 megapixel stills are also impressive, but the most attractive aspect is the huge assortment of Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Read More

Attention Fusion still/video shooters: The honeymoon with so-called "bokeh art" is over. The harsh facts have been revealed. Working with the new generation of HD video-capable still cameras is just plain hard—many times it's frustrating beyond belief for the videographer wanting to take advantage of the buzz and technological edge. These "first born" supertechie cameras are just a year old and haven't grown up enough to let you in on their secrets. Read More
